MicroSoft에서 만든 게임용 라이브러리.

시초는 윈도우즈에서 고속으로 하드웨어를 조작할 수 있게 해 주는 라이브러리였으나, 버젼업이 되면서 일종의 멀티미디어 SDK로 강화되는 면모를 보인다.

비슷한 용도로 쓰이는 라이브러리로 SDL(Simple Directmedia Layer)이 있다. SDL은 멀티플랫폼을 지원하는 자유소프트웨어이다.
