원래 이야기는 더 웃긴 이야기였는데 한글버전을 보니 많이 변질되었군요:)
결론은 partially right이고 mostly wrong 이랍니다.
spacepen 을 개발하기 위해 NASA가 수백만 달러의 세금을 썼다는 것은
거짓이랍니다. 온도 얘기는 원래 없었던 것 같고. 무중력 상태에서
쓸 수 있다는 얘기는 사실입니다. (아마 볼펜을 벽에 종이 대고 쓸 때
펜쪽이 더 높으면 시간경과후 잘 안써진다는 것은 경험 하셨을줄로 압니다)

연필로 썼었다는군요. 그런데 연필은 뾰쪽하고 위험해서 (무중력 상태로
돌아다니다가 눈이나 코 등을 찌르기 때문) spacepen 개발 이후에는 spacepen을
썼다고 합니다. 미소 양쪽 다.

Pencils in Space!
This is a space race urban legend that is sometimes used to point out
NASA's lunacy and space exploration's grievous waste of money.
This has to do with writing instruments. According to the note, Paul
Fisher was asked by NASA in the 1960s to develop a space pen.
They supposedly spent millions of taxpayers' dollars to develop a pen that
would work in space. The Russians, however,used a much
more elegant solution -- the pencil. This rumor is partly right and mostly
wrong. It is true that Mr. Fisher developed a pen to use in space, but
at no expense to NASA or the American taxpayer. Before the pen was
available, both Russian and American astronauts used pencils.
Pencils were ruled unsafe for several reasons --
they burn, they can break and float into delicate instruments, and they
might get into a nose or an eye, just name a few. The space pen was
eventually developed and sold to NASA for about $3 each. It was also
eventually used by the Russians as well.
