영미권에서는 이 책은, 최소한 이 책의 이름은, 이미 일종의 상식이 되었을 정도로 많이 정말 많이 읽힌 책이다. 1974년 처음 출간된 이후로 스테디셀러의 자리를 놓치지 않고 있다. 비록 전작만큼 널리 읽히진 않았지만, 동저자의 후속작으로 Lila(0553299611 )가 있다.
