1979년에 작곡되어 당시부터의 라이브에서도 연주되었다. BBC John Peel Show를 포함, 방송되기 시작하자 영국 전역에서 '아직 발표되지 않은 가장 유명한 노래'로 인기와 주목을 끌었고 1980년 3월 싱글로 발매되어 조이 디비전 최초로 차트에서도 성공을 거둔 싱글이 되었다. 이윽고 두 달이 채 지나지 않은 5월 18일 보컬인 이언 커티스가 자살하자 차트의 순위는 더 높아졌다. 'Love will tear us apart' 는 그의 묘비에 문구로 새겨졌고, 살아남은 나머지 조이 디비전 멤버들은 그의 기일에 모여 이 노래를 연주한다고 한다.
Substance 1977-1980 (조이 디비전의 싱글들을 모은 앨범, 1988년), Permanent (뉴 오더의 소속사 런던 레코드에서 편집한 조이 디비전의 베스트 앨범. 아서 베이커의 리믹스 버전도 수록되어 있다), The Complete BBC Recordings (위에 언급한 존 필 쇼의 라이브 수록), Heart And Soul (박스셋) 등에서 들을 수 있으며 1995년 5월 다시 싱글로 발매되기도 했다. --Heather
