나왔을때 스래쉬메틀에 대한 배신이라는 욕을 바가지로 퍼먹었던 명반. 당시 중딩이었던 거북이역시 욕을 퍼붓는 축이었지만 3, 4 년이 지난 즈음 이것이 90년대의 시대정신을 반영한 명반이라는 것을 느끼게 되었다. 육중한 느낌의 재킷과 함께 단순해진 곡 구조에도 불구하고 여전히 강렬한 헤비사운드를 구사하고 있다.
메틀리카의 팬들은 이 앨범 이전에 알던 팬들과 이 앨범 이후에 알게된 팬들로 확 갈린다. 거북이가 메틀리카의 조선공연을 보러갔을때 느꼈던 재미있던 점은 이 앨범 이전의 곡들이 나왔을때 따라부르던 층과 이 앨범 이후의 곡들이 나왔을때 따라부르던 층이 다르다는 것이었다.

'Metallica' 이전 앨범이 거친 스피드와 분노를 담고 있다면 이후 앨범들은 그루브한 헤비함과 냉정함이 배어 있다고 생각한다. 3집과 4집이 명반의 대열에 올라있지만 5집(Metallica)역시 명반이라고 생각한다. 헤비함을 앞세우고 자신의 목소리를 키워가던 밴드들이 많이 있었지만 이들처럼
자신의 스타일을 변화시키고 그 형상을 뚜렷하게 한곡 한곡 세겨넣은 밴드들은 많지 않았다고 생각한다. 이 앨범 이전의 음반들이 감상자에게
맹렬한 해드뱅잉을 선물했다면(특정 곡은 제외) 이 앨범 이후부터는 머리뿐만 아니라 몸도 함께, 비트와 리듬을 타게 만드는 흥분상태를 유도해 냈다. --전진호

클리프 버튼이 죽은 후 메탈리카의 음악이 완전히 변한 것 같다. 이전까지는 클리프의 지칠줄 모르던 파워가 모든 곡에 베어있었는데... (실제로 대부분의 곡을 클리프가 썼다고 들었다.) 클리프 한 사람의 손실이 메탈리카에게는 너무 컷던 것 같다.. 그 이후 자신들만의 색을 찾기는 했지만, 역시... 난 클리프가 그립다 ㅠ_ㅠ --붉은눈의시체
