Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design implementation, and improvement of integrated systems, which consist of people, machines, materials, and information, such as factories, power plants, automobiles, communication networks, satellites, computers, missiles, robots, etc. In particular, Industrial Engineering puts a great emphasis on optimizing such systems through scientific principles and approaches. The Department aims at training students so that they can lead the industry of our country by enhancing its competitiveness.

내가 생각하기에는 산업공학의 본질은 "효율적인 공장" 만들기이다. 그걸 하려고, 인간공학, 신뢰성공학, 경영과학, 정보시스템, 수리계획, 산업심리학 등등이 필요했던 거다. (공장을 시스템이란 말로 쉽게 대체하지만, 산업공학이 참으로 유효했던 산업이 제조업이었음을 생각할 때, 추가 설명을 필요로 하는 시스템이란 말대신, "공장"이라는 표현이 일반인에게 설명해주기에는 적합하다고 생각한다.) 산업의 중심이 더 이상 공장이 아닌 요즘... 공장 대신 시스템이란 단어를 사용하면서 과거의 산업공학 기술들을 현재의 요구에 맞게 사용해보려고 하는 시도가 있지만, 아주 참신하거나 효과적인 시도를 보지 못했다. 산업공학도의 숙제라고 본다. --이지수
