1953년 왓슨과크릭은 DNA의 이중나선 구조를 풀어냈다. 유전물질의 구조가 풀리면서 분자생물학은 급속도의 발전을 이루게 된다. DoubleHelix 에서도 밝히고 있는 내용이지만 우리는 그 발견의 중심에 로잘린 프랭클린이라는 위대한 여성과학자가 있음을 알고 있다. 여기에 덧붙여 분자세포생물학의 발전에 크게 기여한 한 흑인여성을 우리는 잊지 말아야 한다.
Henrietta Lacks는 흑인 여성이었다. 자궁경부암에 걸려 의사를 찾아갔던 그녀는 암발생여부를 조사하기 위해 그녀의 세포를 존스 홉킨스 대학으로 보내게 된다. 인간의 몸밖에서 세포를 배양하는 기술을 연구중이던 연구팀은 그녀의 세포를 이용해 세포배양을 이루어낼 수 있었다. 인간의 normal한 체세포는 몸밖으로 나와서 배양되면 평균적으로 50회의 분열후 사멸한다. Malignant한 cancer cell을 이용하면 이러한 세포의 죽음없이 지속적으로 세포를 배양할 수 있다. 그녀의 암세포는 그녀이름의 앞뒤 두글자씩을 따서 HeLaCell이라고 이름붙여졌다.
사람은 영원히 살 수 없다. 불로초를 찾기 위해 갖은 노력을 했던 진시황도 죽었고, 예수도 부활했으나 다시 승천했다. 부처님도 공자님도 모두 그들의 Meme만을 남겨두고 세상을 떠나가셨다. 하지만 Henrietta Lacks는 그녀가 살아있었을 때는 꿈도 꾸지 못했던 세계여행을 하며 아직도 살아 숨쉬고 있다. 어떤 생물학자는 HeLaCell이 더이상 인간의 형태는 아니지만 오히려 Single-celled microorganisms에 가깝다고 이야기한다. 그녀는 새로운 방법으로 우리곁에 살아 있는 것이다.
김우재는 오늘도 그녀를 부드럽게 어루만지며 그녀에게 감사한다. 그녀는 김우재의 실험에 지대한 공헌을 했으며, Immortal의 새로운 방법을 일깨워 준다. 그녀는 모든 생명과학자들의 마음속에서 아름답게 살아가고 있다.

Henrietta Lacks는 분명히 죽었다. 살아있는건 그녀의 일부 세포들뿐이지만, 그것들은 생각할 수도 없고, 사랑할 수도 없다. 생물학적으로 immortal할지는 몰라도, 인간적으로는 죽어있다. 아마도, HeLaCell의 일부를 유전자재조합해서 암부분을 치유하고, 체세포복제기술을 써서(인간복제처럼), 다시 사람으로 만든다고 할지라도, 쌍둥이가 그러한것처럼 전혀 다른 인격의 사람이 될것이다. 인간에게 있어서, 죽음 그것은 뇌의 돌이킬수없는 망가짐. 인격의 죽음에 한정해야할 것 같다.

3. Rensberger quotes the cell biologist Matthias Schleiden's insight into what we are, what our cells 'are' - they 'lead double lives, their own and that of the organism of which they are a part'. He goes on to say that 'the human body is a republic of cells, a
society of discrete living beings who have, for the good of the society as a whole, sacrificed their individual freedoms. : In my understanding, some biologists seem to be struggling with the pang of conscience.
